Surrealist sculpture, comprising -White plaster bust from Paris – metal globe made by a bicycle repairer in London, the work represents the idea of woman being like the earth. On her are stripes representing the strata of the earth, revealed by the cutting. It stands on a wooden base.

History:
Sculptor Sir Roland Algernon Penrose (1900-1984), and presented by Mrs Gabrielle Keiller through the Friends of the Tate Gallery in 1982.
The first version of this was destroyed in storage during the 2nd World War. The artist made this second version with his son Anthony, in 1967.
This sculpture was one of Penrose’s contributions in 1936 to the International Surrealist Exhibition in London.
