Description: A plaque on a small pink granite stone, at the front of the Bill Memorial Library, Groton Bank, to the right of the entrance. The Library is close to Fort Griswold. History: Commissioned by Groton Town officials, because John Ledyard was born at Groton of a prominent local family. Unveiled 14th September 2009, and attended by Town and City officials among others. Inscription:
JOHN LEDYARD 1751 – 1789 A WORLD TRAVELER WHO WAS BORN NEAR HERE. UNDER PRESIDENT JEFFERSON TO HAVE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPLORE THE WEST COAST. TRAVELED WITH CAPTAIN COOK ON HIS FINAL VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD HE THEN WALKED AROUND MUCH OF THE WORLD AND DIED IN EGYPT BEFFORE HE COULD EXPLORE AFRICA.
