Description:
The obelisk monument is sited on a grassy slope at Kurnell, opposite to the place where the Endeavour anchored in the still waters of Botany Bay.
The address is – Solander Drive, Monument Track, Botany Bay National Park, Kurnell, 2231.
History:
Erected by the Swedish community in 1914, to Dr Daniel Carl Solander (1733-1782), a Swedish naturalist who sailed with Cook on the Endeavour.
On 18th February 1938 the monument was handed over to the Captain Cook’s Landing Place Trust.
and then reinaugurated in October 2015 after restoration work.
The southern headland of Botany Bay is also named in Dr Solander’s honour.
