Description: at the Swedish Embassy, Canberra. The plants in the garden reflect those described and named by Daniel Solander , the Swedish naturalist, during his time in Australia with Captain Cook’s expedition on HMB Endeavour in 1770. History: A garden in memory of Daniel Carlsson Solander (1733-1782), was first suggested by H E Mr Par Ahlberger, Swedish Ambassador to Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Region, in 2015, when the Solander Garden at Botany Bay had been re-inaugurated. The Embassy building in Canberra had just undergone restoration by the National Property Board of Sweden, and His Excellency suggested laying out a garden in the grounds in memory of Solander. The garden was officially inaugurated on 7th September 2017 by Mr Urban Ahlin, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament. Inscription: A comprehensive information board tells of Solander’s work while on the voyage, when he accompanied Sir Joseph Banks in collecting around 17,000 plant species. Solander had studied under Carl von Linneaeus. The image of Solander on the board is used by the Solander Society as logotype.
