Description:
The statue is across the road from the Iolani Palace.
Plaques on the statue show scenes of the King’s life. One plaque is a relief showing Resolution with inscription (below).
History:
King Kamehameha visited Resolution on 30th November 1778 when the ships were in Maui. Chief Kalani’opu’u (King of the Island of Hawai’i) visited with his nephew, the young chief Kamehameha (1758-1819). Kamehameha and five others stayed in the ship overnight.
The statue was unveiled in 1883, it is a replica of the one at Kohala, Hawai’I, the King’s birthplace.
