Twelve stamps were issued depicting ships, scientists and explorers connected with these islands.  The top value, £5, features James Cook and Resolution with the year 1775, as that is when they visited the islands.  The £3 value has Fabian von Bellingshausen who was born in 1779, the year of Cook’s death.  In 1819 in Vostock, he visited South Georgia and discovered the three northern South Sandwich Islands that Cook had missed.⁸

Four 70c stamps were issued featuring items from four Australian museums.  One depicts the anchor of Endeavour held in the National Museum of Australia collection, Canberra, and on display at the James Cook Museum, Cooktown, Queensland.¹  When Endeavour struck an outcrop of the Great Barrier Reef in 1770, the wrought-iron anchor was discarded with other heavy items to free the ship.²  It was eventually salvaged in 1971 by an expedition led by CCS member David Hume.³  The wooden stock was made, and added, in 1975.⁴
