Twelve stamps were issued depicting ships, scientists and explorers connected with these islands. The top value, £5, features James Cook and Resolution with the year 1775, as that is when they visited the islands. The £3 value has Fabian von Bellingshausen who was born in 1779, the year of Cook’s death. In 1819 in Vostock, he visited South Georgia and discovered the three northern South Sandwich Islands that Cook had missed.8
