Born in Marton, schooled at Great Ayton, in 1745 Cook was apprenticed to William Sanderson’s haberdashers and grocers shop in Staithes.
He didn't stay there long before moving to Whitby in 1746, to become an apprenctice seaman under Captain John Walker.
In 1755, Cook left to join the Navy.
Several articles about his time based at Whitby have been published in Cook's Log.
Some of these articles are available to be read here.
