Cook joined the Royal Navy in 1755 and for the first seven years he served in ships of the line such as HMS Eagle, Pembroke and Northumberland. They carried companies of several hundred men, so over a period of two years over 1,000 men might serve in a ship. That number is too high and impractical to reproduce easily, so a very small selection of significant men has been chosen and their muster entries have been included here.
