Ralph Jackson’s diary - Part 3a: Comments on William Sanderson

I have a few comments on part 3 of this series of articles by Cliff Thornton.

Please refer to the diary entries with the following dates:

21 January 1759	In Bankruptcy, 1788, Mrs Scottowe’s purchase of Hinderwell Estate was for £533-6-8 and Thos. White buys a field for £125-5-0. J. Richardson, son-in-law to Sanderson, buys Handale Estate for £864-7-6, for 290 acres or thereabouts. (So, £2,500 in 1759 seems a very large sum of money and does not seem correct.)
25 February 1762	On 29 July 1780 in London a Francis Easterby brought bankruptcy proceedings against Elizabeth Sanderson, widow of William Sanderson, and their son John, being owed £437 9s 3d. A few years later on 7th June 1788 in Whitby William Peacock “Shopman to Elizabeth Sanderson and John Sanderson of Staithes near Whitby... Shopkeepers and partners carrying on Trade and Business in the name of John Sanderson only” made a sworn statement that "on Tuesday the Twentieth day of May last Mr Easterby whom this Deponent [person who makes a deposition under oath] know to be a Creditor, came to the House of the said Elizabeth Sanderson and John Sanderson and inquired for them, whom this Deponent pursuant to the Directions he had before received from them, informed the said Mr Easterby that the said Elizabeth Sanderson and John Sanderson were not at home, although the said Elizabeth Sanderson and John Sanderson were at home at the back part of the House". So, Francis Easterby is owed money.
22 August 1774	The Mr Sanderson mentioned here could not be William, who died on 12 November 1773. It could have been his son John, who lent horses.
2 November 1765	Could this Thos. Pearson be the same Thos. Peirson of King Street, Cheapside, London, who on 26th June 1788 “saith that Elizabeth Sanderson and John Sanderson of Staithes near Whitby” still owe him £2,302 15s 7d?. And is he the Mr Peirson whom William Peacock said also called upon Elizabeth and John Sanderson, but he denied they were present?

Regarding Sanderson’s links with India

John Sanderson writes in a letter of a John Sanderson (possibly an uncle) "formerly Gov. of Vizagapatam". There is also evidence in East India Company records of John Sanderson (possibly Sanders as this was the family name) going to India as a writer or clerk and moving up the promotional ladder.
