John Wybrow joined Resolution for Cook’s Second Voyage on 17 December, 1771, at Deptford. He had joined Scorpion as an able bodied seaman (AB) on 18 September, 1771, when Cook was in charge of her. With Cook, Wybrow transferred to Drake, which was then renamed Resolution.
Wybrow was born in Edinburgh about 1753. He became a boatswain some time after leaving Resolution. An entry for “John Wybrow, boatswain” appears in the lists for “Warrants or commissions for service at this rank in the Royal Navy” for 1780,1 and 1783.2
Wybrow married Mary Andrews Edwards on 22 April, 1790, at St. George’s Church, East Stonehouse, Devon. However, after his death in 1794, he was described as a widower, and “boatswain of HMS Fame”,3 a third-rate ship:
