Francis Scarnell (Scarnale) joined Resolution for Cook’s Second Voyage on 3 January, 1772, at Deptford as Quartermaster. He became an able bodied seaman (AB) on 10 July.
Scarnell was the fourth child of Francis Scarnale and Elizabeth Doling, who were married on 27 April, 1743, at St. Thomas, Portsmouth. On 23 December, 1745, he is recorded as living at Penny Street, Portsmouth.
Scarnell was baptised in Portsmouth on 25 September, 1748, and married Elizabeth Cooper on 26 November, 1777, at Gosport.
